The Missouri Compromise started when Missouri's application for statehood
stirred up the country's most divisive issue which was whether or not slavery should push westward.
Henry Clay steered the Missouri Compromise through the House of Representatives
which passes it by a close vote in March of 1820. The year after Missouri became
the 24th state and the Missouri Compromise temporarily calmed the argument over
the westward expansion of slavery.
